Twenty one years and seven laptops later
My new laptop just got its first excitement as I carefully unpacked it from its cardboard packaging and switched it on. Purchased in late August in the knowledge that Windows 10 wouldn’t be supported beyond some time in 2025, it’s sat on the bookcase upstairs in the study since early September.
Today I’ve concluded that humans crave familiarity. A curious statement from me given my love of change, decluttering and transformation. I need to share that’s all a façade. It must be mustn’t it, otherwise I’d have opened the box sooner, wouldn’t I? Or maybe I’m just feeling anxious because I’ve left myself behind and I’ve always thought of myself as progressive!
My lovely Tech Manager, aka my niece’s partner advised on the specification and took the time to come over and set it up for me back in September. It’s a fabulous piece of kit although I remained loyal to the familiarity of my old sluggish laptop, the Dell Inspiron purchased in April 2021. Here’s what I wrote at the time.
It was not fashion or whim which determined the purchase … my new love is a Dell Inspiron. It’s not blue, or orange, or violet, although it converts to a tablet. It’s understated and responsive. So, there you have it, 17 years of HW HR Consulting on six laptops and some wonderful insights into my consumer choices. Who knows whether Inspiron will satisfy my ongoing desire to work, to write and to create? For now, at least the keys appear to be where they’re needed.
Thinking about the human aspects of change once more, it needs to be wholehearted. Organisation transformation isn’t something to leave in a box for six months as I did with my new laptop. It’s something to be embraced. I’m ashamed to disclose that I’ve loved typing on my new backlit keyboard, and I’ve realised that there’s nothing wrong with my bespectacled eyesight that more pixels can’t solve. There are so many system improvements and tools available to us to make our lives easier, whether that’s at work or at home. This sunny afternoon I’m encouraging you to take something new out of the box and give it a try!
Yesterday I lost myself momentarily on a royalty free music platform. I’m a little late to that party although it’s taken me one step closer to creating some YouTube content I can use when promoting my book. I’m not suggesting that organisations need a playlist to proceed with their change programmes although maybe that’s not such a ridiculous idea? What’s on your list? I didn’t need AI to remind me of Changes by David Bowie or Imagine by John Lennon, and let’s not forget the Lightening Seeds’ lyric:
The world is full of fools
Who never get it right
You don't know what to do
So you do anything you like
